Third Report - One Year On With Noctura 400

23/07/2025

One year on, an update of my experience using the Noctura 400 sleep mask, the non-invasive green light therapy for retinopathy & macular oedema. Which has been shown to slow down or halt retinopathy progression by using two Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs).

As an older person with type 1 diabetes for nearly 71 years, I consider myself lucky that the only complications that I have are slight retinopathy & macular oedema in my eyes.

My vision is important to me so I am pleased to be trying the Noctura 400 to see if it will help me stave off these complications. The daily use of the mask each night is important for maximum benefit. So far so good. After one-year slight improvements again.

I returned in early May 2025 to Concept Eye Options to have my eyes tested for Visual Acuity and they were scanned with an advanced Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) camera system that doesn't need my eyes dilating, so civilised.

The results from the pod - my compliance using the Noctura 400.

The used pods are returned to PolyPhotonix Ltd every 3 months for analysis. The graphs confirm my use every night, the consistent green lines show that the mask is making good contact with my face so that I am getting the maximum benefit from the green light. My last 2 masks percentages were both 97% use.

Results from my first annual OCT Scans

I didn't have any significant oedema at baseline; therefore, I was not expecting to see much change -  a result of staying stable is the aim.

The good news is that the OCT scans, which at 6 months showed a small improvement in both eyes, have continued that improvement at 12 months, with the small reductions in the key thickness and volume measures being maintained.

Polyphotonix have tabulated the results and all the key numbers in the spreadsheet below:

My RE Visual Acuity which had improved from 6/9.5 to 6/7.5 at 6 months, has improved further at 12 months to 6/6-2. This coding means that at 6 months I read 1 more line in the eye chart and at 12 months I read most of the next line.

See chart below:

I am very pleased, all of this with no change of prescription. My next appointment for an OCT scan is in a year. Watch out for another Noctura 400 blog then.

Other news on the eye front. My checks for glaucoma assessments carried out via the NHS over the past 2 years or so give a visual acuity similar to above and do not indicate that I have or need treatment for glaucoma at this stage.

All good so far. Next, my annual NHS Diabetic Eye Screening appointment is due in August. The dilation eye drops await!
